it-never-rains-only-pours asked you:
Carrie I'm scared. This sounds really petty, but I've been hit on in the past by a couple of youtubers, and it's got nowhere, but how the hell can I learn to trust people when shit like this is coming out from the people you look up to and genuinely have helped you get through crappy points of your life. I don't know what to do, and I'm not even a victim. I can't imagine to think what they are going through right now.

carriehopefletcher:

Unfortunately, we can only control our own actions. We need to teach younger generations to respect each other and not to use and abuse each other but at the same time, there are already people out there in older generations who have already learnt the wrong ways in which to interact with people so we also need to teach younger generations to be aware of the situations they may potentially find themselves in and what to do should they arise. I will be making a video when I get a chance this week about the responsibilities we all have as viewers and creators, guys and girls, younger and older generations because I think everyone’s starting to forget that yes, we may start making videos as a fun thing that we don’t expect to go anywhere, but with each new subscriber and as the audience grows, we have more of a responsibility to make sure that we know exactly the sort of person that’s watching and how old they are, and adjust our content accordingly whilst still maintaining ourselves and our own morals and beliefs within them.

We don’t get to choose whether we are role models to other people. Someone I once knew struggled to grasp that concept and it really bugged me. Just because you don’t feel worthy of the title “role model” that doesn’t change the fact that someone else does think you’re worthy of that title and will look up to you regardless of whether you think you’re worthy of it or not. So, we then need to either remove ourselves from any situation in which people could look up to us in that way if it makes us THAT uncomfortable i.e. stopping making YouTube videos in which we encourage people to watch and listen to us or B. adapt to it and rise the responsibility of making sure our content is safe to watch for our audiences. This is not to say we’re perfect and will never do any wrong. We’re still only human, of course. But at least then we’re more aware of the people watching us and we know that what we’re offering for them to watch is safe and okay.

The way I think about it is, I have a nephew now and when he’s a older, say around thirteen, I won’t swear in front of him or talk about things that he shouldn’t hear about at thirteen years old and that is exactly the same way I will treat my audience in my videos because, even though there are a lot of people watching me who are my own age, the majority of people watching are aged between 13-18. Just because I don’t know my audience on a personal level, that does not give me the excuse to treat them any differently from the younger generations of my own family who I want to see grow up into respectable adults who know what it is to respect someone and treat them accordingly. I feel like YouTubers especially are forgetting that their audiences are made up of PEOPLE. Not shapeless, faceless beings who they can talk to however they choose because “if someone doesn’t like it they can just switch off”. There’s a major difference between someone not liking your content because what you’re presenting them with is not their cup of tea….and purposely putting on a persona and creating content that people aren’t meant to like and that are designed to make people feel awkward and uncomfortable. And we certainly should call out the people are aren’t treating their audiences well and respectfully, whether that’s through their videos or on a personal level, to make sure this community is safe for everyone involved.

Anyway, that’s just a portion of what I think on the subject but in reply to your message, you may not be responsible for YouTubers hitting on you but you have a hand in telling them to stop because it makes you feel uncomfortable or removing yourself from contact with them by blocking numbers and accounts. But everyone is individual and Youtuber isn’t a breed. We’re all very different from each other and there are a lot of people who make videos who aren’t asshats. I just hope that everyone takes a step back and re-evaluates the way they treat not just their audiences but their friends too.

So Carrie was a bit of an Alex Day fan girl! 💚

Haha no actually, Alex gave me all of his music to me the first time I met him and then gave me an extra set when I was doing that raffle at SitC! :D Although, I’m as much as a fangirl as a girlfriend can be! ;) xxx
